Rhythmic Bullet Hell Prototype | Game Jam Project

BeatHell is a fast-paced bullet hell prototype developed in 10 days for Bullet Hell Jam 2023, responding to the theme “Limited.” The project explores constraint-driven design by turning traditional bullet hell mechanics into a resource-management challenge.

Rather than simply dodging incoming fire, players must actively engage with enemy projectiles to survive and attack, creating a constant tension between risk and reward.

Core Design Concepts

  • Limited ammunition as a core mechanic
    Players do not generate ammo passively; it must be collected from incoming enemy fire.

  • Absorption-based resource loop
    Projectiles can be absorbed to replenish ammo, encouraging aggressive positioning rather than pure avoidance.

  • Capacity constraints
    Ammunition storage is intentionally capped, forcing players to make moment-to-moment decisions about when to attack or absorb.

  • Limit Break system
    Overfilling the ammo meter triggers an automatic, screen-clearing radial attack, rewarding controlled risk-taking.

  • Screen constraints
    The game is constrained to only the bounds of a single screen.
